Breaking Weather News: It’s Hot!
As some of you may or may not know, I am Canadian. That means each conversation I have with someone usually involves some mention of the weather. It’s true. I didn’t notice it until I moved to the U.S. and would talk to people back home, H would always find it interesting that the topic of the weather would always arise when I was on the phone with them.
What can I say, the weather has an effect on what we do and how we feel. Why do Canadians seem to talk about it all the time? That one I can’t answer, but I can tell you this.
It’s hot in Los Angeles. Too hot actually.
When I think of May spring comes to mind - sunny and cloudy days mixed in with rain as the seasons change. Comfortable weather you know? The kind where you can throw a sweater on and be happy you don’t have your winter jacket out. I mean the damn poem says “April showers bring May flowers …”
Not in California. Here I think the poem goes “April warm weather brings blazing hot summer time temperatures.”
It’s going to be 98 here today. 98! It’s May 16th! That’s just wrong … The hot weather, in the 90s, is supposed to continue throughout the weekend and into next week when a cold front moves through and pushes us back down into the 80s.
Now before you hammer me and say “Why are you complaining? I’d love to have weather like that!” hear me out. I think it is kind of cool here in California that you can make plans and know you are not going to be rained out. It’s comforting to know our car isn’t going to get plowed in when they clear the streets. But let’s be honest here, 90 degree weather in May? That’s a little much.
Which brings me to an observation about the people of Los Angeles and weather. I’ve told you how they dress in the warm and hot weather (in their winter clothes so long as it is fashionable). Well apparently they have a use for umbrellas here that I was unaware of. You see it doesn’t rain here in Los Angeles - ever, pretty much. So people use their umbrellas to shield them from the sun. That’s right, they use umbrellas to block the sun from beating down on them.
I understand the need for protection, I mean I can burn outside in 5 minutes if I don’t have a hat or sunblock on. But I find it interesting that umbrella sales people somehow convinced the residents of L.A. to use their products to protect them from the UV rays. Why not, it’s not like it will rain here.
That’s good marketing kids.

Thanks for the comment! It is a little strange to peek in our closet and see a section on the rack of winter jackets and coats, and above it an Ikea box of gloves and mittens.

You both need to sit in the sand with toes in the surf and try and remember our most recent winter - the long snowy walks from the EL to your place, the drives in the snow and the fact that most places ran out of salt this past winter. Embrace the weather! And wear the sunscreen & get out the umbrella. Wish we were there. A big hug sent to Carter - the Wonder Dog (as well to you both!)
