Today was kind of a lazy Sunday; we had visitors since Tuesday and we were going to take it easy and just hang around. After getting some laundry started H decided to eat some left overs, I decided to wait and grab something when we were out on our walk. I wanted something simple and settled on a hot dog. Since you can’t get a hot dog from a street vendor without it being wrapped in bacon (don’t ask) I figured we would head up to Weeneez.
The place is called Weeneez. They sell hot dogs.
Just not on Sundays.
After walking forever in the heat we stepped inside and were immediately greeted by someone who asked if we were there for brunch?
“Brunch? No, I’d like a hot dog.”
“We don’t have hot dogs today.”
Wait a second here — your place is called Weeneez, you serve hot dogs ever day of the week except Sunday. Why? If you want to serve brunch on Sunday, or everyday of the week, I don’t care. But don’t call your place Weeneez. Why advertise hot dogs if you aren’t going to sell them?
H and I have been to the place a few times and it’s always been alright. Nothing special, just hot dogs. Not as good as Portillo’s and not as good as something you would get off the street in New York City or Toronto. But it has always been a decent dog none the less.
I’ll assume they are trying to drum up more business and tap into the Sunday brunch crowd. Our friend Skid Row Dude was there today and enjoyed it which is great! I guess I just don’t understand where they are going and why I can’t get a hot dog on Sunday.
Ha Ha! I think I may have seen you and H – while I was there for brunch (about 1:30pm) 2 groups came in looking for hot dogs, one after the other, and poor Julie had to say “not today”- I forgot to add this to my review as it seems she just can’t win. I went a couple of weeks ago, w/o checking carefully, and they were CLOSED- that pissed me off. Now she’s open on Sundays, and it still pisses people off…
I don’t know if you saw the article in LA Weekly about “Chicago Dogs’- I think you’ve gone to one of these places that Jonathan Gold slams-
“Taste Chicago, Joe and Arlene Mantegna’s Burbank emporium of indifferent Chicago pizza, hot dogs and lemon ice”
rest of article is kind of interesting…

Give Weeneez another try sometime- but I prefer the bacon cheeseburger there (no fries, damnit, but I guess it’s a good calorie-restriction).
Sorry if we missed you – I was so stunned at not being able to have lunch!
We’ve eaten there a few times and it always has been decent. I just wish they would settle on their game plan and stick to it.
Thanks for the link – We have already been to Taste Chicago a few times and Portillo’s is also mentioned in the article — I’ve been trying to get there at least every other week for jumbo hot dogs.
So I guess we did just miss each other- I had my back to door but probably would not have put 2-and-2 together seeing you and H, even though I think I’ve seen pics of your “family” on another blog.
If you’re in Hollywood or Hermosa Beach, try SKoobies hot dogs sometime. That is my #1 place- and great fries/chips, beer flights from microbrewery (yes- flights!).

Check out a Philly’s Best near you.
“Philly’s Best”- none downtown or near the beach (in old days I would not go East of 405 for anything, and my old friends still follow that rule).
Now I like to support downtown places as they need the support…
We decided to put dogs back on the menu for the brunch. It worked out fine this past Sunday.
We have the best chili in the universe.
The dogs we use are from Thumanns and Vienna Beef and Shofar Kosher Polish. These are some of the best in dog world. All the great hot dog restaurants carry these dogs. I could have bought any dog including having some specially made for us. None compared to the Thumanns and Vienna Beef and the Shofar Kosher Polish.
Thank you for thinking about Weeneez
