On Sunday we bought a new camera, a Canon PowerShot A2000 IS. So far we are quite happy with our purchase, and the screen on the back of our new camera sure beats the old clunker we have been carrying around (see below).
H and I have both made a pledge to carry our camera around with us more often, something I hope we follow up on after the novelty of a new gadget wears off. In the mean time we have been snapping away so here are a few pictures and of course a few stories, comments or banter as well. (As always, click on the images for a bigger view)
Here’s the back of our old camera, and I’m pretty sure you could fit 3 or 4 screens from this one onto the back of our new PowerShot. Check out the link at the beginning of the post for the product page which includes a few images.
On Sunday we walked around the corner to check out the Emmys, and Carter came along. Here he is riding in the elevator thinking we are about to take a nice stroll through downtown LA when in fact we stood against a barricade in a crowd full of people.
Our celeb photos from the Emmys aren’t that great, for a few reasons. First we owned the camera a total of 30 minutes prior to heading out so our knowledge base at this point in time was being able to turn it on and get into basic mode. As you can see I am three, maybe four deep in the crowd and relegated to shooting over people’s heads while holding the camera in the air. See the woman in the flowing light blue/turquoise gown? Christina Applegate. Trust me.
Flower Street was shut down from 9th to 12th for the arriving guests and limo search.
Apparently the red carpet isn’t too special. The next morning workers had already taken down all the temporary seating and were in the process of hauling the carpet into bins. Do they think they called 800, five eight eight two three-hundred … Empire!?
If you live in LA I don’t have to tell you the mess Figueroa Street has been with all the construction going on at LA Live. Directly in front of the Grammy Museum they have traffic down to a single lane in one direction. There are also gigantic signs telling people the sidewalk is closed but that didn’t stop our European tourist friends from walking down the middle of the single lane of traffic. I’m going to assume they’re tourists and European based solely on looks and dress. For example, the one dude has a jacket on but little does he know that September in LA means 90 degree weather. Another hint, no tapered jeans. Aside from H and I everyone in LA is back to the 80s look of having jeans tapered down to the ankle. Do you think the acid or stone wash look is coming back? Anyhow, these people thought walking down the middle of the one open lane of traffic was a good idea so how could you not snap a pic.
Downtown LA residents, this one’s for you! Every afternoon the metal door rolls up at 1040 Grand Avenue and this ‘place’ opens for business. From 4-5 p.m. younger looking women of Mexican/Latin decent begin strolling in through the door and up the stairs. By nightfall there is a steady stream of men hanging around the place, both inside and out. We asked a cab driver recently what took place there and he told us it was the “1040 Bar and Grill”. Riiiiiiiight. I should have taken a wider shot of this place, because next door on one side is an electrical lighting outlet and the other side is empty. Anyone been in here or knows what really goes on in the door and up the stairs? Should I be asking this?
Notices are all over the building regarding window washing. I’m thrilled to have clean windows, at least on the outside, but the note could have been a little clearer don’t you think? Do I really have to keep my windows closed from the middle of September until the second week of October? Seems a little harsh.
CSI New York is back in downtown LA filming once again. Yesterday H and I ran into a MTA bus, a coroners truck, numerous cars with NY license plates, and these two police vehicles spewing fake smoke into the air. We stood for five minutes and realized it was a typical tv shoot – all kinds of people standing around and waiting.
The high-rise across the street from us is just about to top off, making it the biggest residential building in downtown LA. It’s no Trump Tower in Chicago but hey, what can you do. Speaking of which did you see that Ivanka was in Chi-town for the topping off ceremony. I like Ivanka … Oh yeah, and Donald Jr. reminds me of Adam Wilson (or Adam Newman, or Adam Victor Wilson, or Adam Victor Newman) from the Y&R.
We leave you today with Starbucks. Neither H or I drink coffee but we like hot chocolate. Lately the two of us find ourselves craving our favourite hot drink and I think it has something to do with the calendar. You see it’s the end of September, fall is here and the air is crisp and cool with winter just around the corner. Well at least that it what our bodies are telling us. Fact of the matter is we wanted hot chocolate yesterday and visited Starbucks to pick up our drinks before heading out into the 90 degree hot sun. Enough already!

The place at 1040 Grand Avenue is a nightclub of some sort.
You probably can really enjoy a cup of hot chocolate by Dec. Hang in there.
And instead of hot chocolate, something cooler to get you through the night. Free Cold Stone ice cream tonight.
It’s funny you mentioned the Cold Stone promotion – I saw that in an RSS feed today
From the brief internet research I did, and I couldn’t go into any detailed research since I’m on the computer at work, it appears that it is a “Hostess Bar” and the fee is $28/hour.
I wanted to Google “Hostess Bar” to find out what exactly that is, but as I said, I’m at work. LOL
Hey Norah, thanks for the comment.
I am not at work and will look up more. Let me know what you find out as well.
Yeeeeaaaah….a “hostess bar” is exactly what you think it is. Don’t look it up at work.
Ladies are paid per hour to talk to you. There are some in Koreatown (so I’ve heard)….they’re legal because they’re SUPPOSED to only talk to you. No hanky-panky.
And if you believe that, you may want to stop in for a deep tissue Thai Massage down the street.
Interesting.
Well- call me crazy, but you make it sound exciting to be able to walk around and see high rises going up, the television awards happening right around the corner- being able to be part of the hustle and bustle- and you can get a Starbucks- cocoa or mocha without driving 15 minutes!
Our big excitement yesterday? While driving out our dirt driveway- we had to stop to let a tarantula go by- legend has it, a tarantula coming out and looking for a mate this early means early and heavy rains!! Do we need it!
We actually have one massage parlour here in Solvang- guess it has customers because of the Casino. The cool stuff that comes with a Casino- don’t get me started.
It is goin to be 98 degress here today- and we are only 30 minutes from the ocean- driving to SB yesterday- the fog over the ocean as viewed from the Hiway 154- AWESOME- it looked like a white carpet out to Santa Rosa Island! A very welcoming carpet.
Have a great weekend!
Yeah Christine, it’s kind of cool to be in the middle of all the excitement that is downtown LA. At the same time, it can be a little much at times. Like anything in life there are pluses and minuses.
Very jealous of the weather you have up there, in terms of the possibility of rain!
Well, it is folklore, so take it with a grain of salt!!! It was very exciting for my 6 yr old to see the huge as spider- very cool. Not as good as the bobcat who lived on our property for a few weeks last fall- or as good as the bears that cross our property looking for water, but almost. At least we can tough this tresspasser.
We need the rain- but hopefully the vintners will get all the grapes off the vine first, then bring on the rain Mother Nature!!
Don’t be down about people making comments on your blog and “arguing”- you put it up- after that you are just the fly on the wall.
My family is from Portage La Prairie- never been there myself (except to be born, haha) but have hundreds of relatives there.
Ever hear of Gentleman Reg? Musician?
Go get yourself a cocoa and put a happy face on friend!!
