It’s been a while since we’ve taken a look at the outfits people are wearing in our neighborhood. What makes this look so special? It’s pretty much the unofficial uniform of FIDM students.
Let’s break it down!
- Tights – A while back Lindsay Lohan made this look popular and the fashionable kids took notice. All the students around here wear them and I’m pretty sure each of them wear a pair more than once a week. What have I learned about tights since living here and walking Carter?
- Some tights extend down and wrap around the foot, other do not.
- Tights are worn with anything and nothing. Some girls sport the tights by themselves while others wear them under a skirt of dress.
- Tights come in all kinds of colors but black is the most popular.
- People of all ages, shapes and sizes wear tights proudly.
- Pulling off tights is tricky. If you are super skinny you tend to look sickly and in need of a few cheeseburgers. Depending on your body type, tights can be unflattering. Students don’t seem to care about either of these facts.
- Footwear – I could write a post on footwear every day while living here in Los Angeles. What’s popular? Boots of any kind and heels so big you can see the pain on the face of girls while they take tiny little steps and grimace in pain. However there is one staple that every student has in their closet: Uggs. I’ve talked before about the furry Uggs and how I don’t understand the desire to wear such warm Australian boots on a warm and sunny day. This girl is wearing the ‘crochet’ Uggs. The first time I saw such boots I thought, “Wow, she made her own boots!” but of course I was mistaken. Not only are they crocheted but they have huge buttons on them but I think it looks silly with how big they appear at the top.
- FIDM Bag – FIDM students don’t go anywhere without their Lands End FIDM bag. We’ve been here almost a year and I’m pretty sure we’ve seen three versions of the bag already, and they just keep getting bigger.
- Cell Phone – You can’t see it but her cell phone is being held up to her ear with her right hand. FIDM students generally travel in packs but when they are flying solo they are talking or texting. It could be some kind of school rule.
- Travel Mug – This one isn’t really unique to FIDM students but it’s definitely a continuing trend. Do you think she brewed something at home and brought it with her? Doubt it.
- Shirts/Sweater – By my count she has three items of clothing on her upper torso: two shirts and the small green sweater. Layering. In California. Go figure.

hahaha…funny but true observations.
Last year i happen to go for a quick bite to the Mc Donald’s on Broadway near 3rd st across from the Grand Central Market. I had my Quarter pounder w/cheese, salty fries and Mr. Pibb.
A female (she had her FIDM bag beside her and the “look” as you described) two tables down from me, had a filet-o-fish and a fruit ‘n yogurt parfait and a bottle water.
I looked and thought to myself..”why even bother going to MCD?”, if not for the greasy fat stuff.
Im anxiously awaiting for the start of Spring and Daylight saving time on March 8th
I love how they when they wear their Ugs and their alligator feet (from all those other shoes they wear that scrunch up their toes) are all sweaty…..then they kick them off and want to jump into bed with you.
Get in the shower first _____!
[...] Last night Yan and I went out-on-the town and I when I first saw her I commented how much I liked her leggings (like many downtown dwellers, she likes to rock the leggings-and-boots look – as very popular in South Park area and well-documented by Brian at his site
) [...]
omg! they are STILL dressing like this? We moved out of South Park a year ago.. and lived in South Park for about 18mo. never understood the Uggs or even worse.. Uggs & those tiny short shorts.. um.. WTF?? Anywhere else that might be the “hooker” look.. but here.. it’s just.. weird.
